Welcome to another installment of Friday Five! I’ve been recruiting indie crafters/sellers and asking them five questions about their work. Zac from Pens and Things is our guest today. He’s a hobby woodworker and makes some really beautiful, manly projects with wood. Read on to learn a little bit about the exciting and sometimes dangerous world of wood turning.
If you’d like to be a part of the Friday Five series (it’s 100% free, fyi), check out the Features page or email handsoccupied-at-gmail-dot-com for more info!
1. Tell me a little bit about yourself and your business.
I am a HOBBY woodworker – this is not a business to me. I never took shop class, this was a totally “pick up on your own” sort of thing. I started out doing “flat-work” woodworking and utilized a particularly helpful online woodworking site. http://www.worldofwoodforum.
2. Why did you decide to go in to business making this/these particular product(s)?
Honestly…..wood turning can be dangerous for someone to attempt by themselves with NO instruction….. pens and similar items are about as safe as you can get as far as trying new things out. Part of what interested me is the safety factor – the other part is the idea that I can start a pen and within a couple of hours I have a FINISHED product where as with flat-work items it could be weeks or months before a finished project is complete. Eventually I had more pens than I could give away which led to me doing craft shows.
3. Do you have a day job, pets, a family, or a partner? How to you balance everything?
I do have a day job – I work in the Business Office of a hospital. I have a family who is incredibly supportive and a 2 year old Chocolate Lab named Romo (not after the football player!)
4. What’s your favorite thing to make or do when you’re not running your business?
My favorite item to make….wow…. that’s tough. Sometimes it’s whatever is newest…..other times it’s something I’ve done time and time again. I love doing shave sets and shave brushes but I’d have to say the overall favorite is a specific order that a customer wants. Pleasing is what I enjoy doing. Outside of my hobby I REALLY love to fish and am fortunate to be able to fish all summer long.
5. Where can we find you online? (Website, Facebook, Etsy, Twitter, etc.)
