Thank goodness it’s Friday! It’s also time for a new series, the Friday Five. Each week, I’m recruiting indie crafters/sellers and asking them five questions about their business. Today, we’re hearing from Revisions Design Studio, a collaborative group from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. I met these kind folks at Chicago’s Renegade Handmade Fest the other week, and they are the nicest team. BONUS: They’ve got a discount for you guys! Read on for details.
1. Tell me a little bit about yourself and your business.
Revisions Design Studio, founded in 2008 by Michele Dugree, is a collaborative multi-disciplinary design studio located in Marquette, Michigan. As an Upper Peninsula native, Michele was looking for a creative outlet while being able to remain in the small town of Marquette. She began Revisions as an online Etsy shop, selling unique home goods and accessories. From there, the success of the studio allowed for expansion into wholesale, and today Revisions products has been featured in many major retailers, including the Museum of Modern Art and Target. The Revisions Design Studio team has now expanded to include Janna Fox, another Upper Peninsula native and recent design graduate and Torrey Dupras, Michele’s tech-savvy husband.
2. Why did you decide to go in to business making this/these particular product(s)?
Michele’s previous day job before she launched Revisions was interior design. After years of doing desk work and purchasing, she wanted to get back to making things with her hands. Her background is in ceramics and she naturally was drawn back to the medium. Revisions has recently been divided into three product lines: Eco Elements (ceramic jewelry and home accessories), The Silver Lining (repurposed silverware jewelry and accessories) Urban Analog (modern laser cut home accessories). Please visit www.revisionsdesignstudio.com for full details on each of these product lines.
3. Do you have a day job, pets, a family, or a partner? How to you balance everything?
Revisions is our full time job, with Michele quitting her day job over three years ago and Janna following suit almost two years ago. We are both married and have an assortment of critters running around our homes. Michele’s two cats and dog are considered the studio’s mascots, as they spend much time hanging out with us during the work day. Finding balance between a young, growing business and our families, as well as our own play time, is a constant challenge. We try to get creative and combine business with pleasure, like taking an afternoon bike ride with the dog while discussing work.
4. What’s your favorite thing to make or do when you’re not running your business?
When she’s not hard at work you can find Michele sailing with her husband and dog or in the kitchen whipping up a fabulous recipe. Janna spends a lot of time with her husband working on house renovations or going thrifting. With the upcoming winter season, you’ll find both of us hitting up the beautiful cross country ski trails in our area.
