1. Tell me a little bit about yourself and your business.
I graduated in 2009 with degrees in art and creative writing. Â My parents’ stipulation for pursuing such degrees was that I had to start a business before I graduated. Â Studio M.M.E. Illustrations formed as a result. Â I’ve worked very hard to learn the ins and outs of marketing, managing, and all around creating a successful business that has become my part-time job. Â I couldn’t be happier! Â My other part-time job involves freelancing as an editor for a variety of artists around the world. Â Basically I get the fun task of making sure their blogs run smoothly and their newsletters are typo-free. Â In what little free-time I have left, I bake like crazy, read children’s books, and ride my vintage Trek men’s roadbike that my boyfriend and I built.
2. Why did you decide to go in to business making this/these particular product(s)?
The promise to my parents notwithstanding, it actually never would have occurred to me NOT to start a business selling my artwork. Â It’s what I truly love to do and life is much to short to do something you don’t enjoy.
3. Do you have a day job, pets, a family, or a partner? How to you balance everything?
I have the other freelance jobs, a boyfriend, and two fish that we just bought (since we can’t have a cat yet due to silly apartment rules). Â Balancing is very hard especially since my boyfriend is in grad school. Â So I stay home all day and work AND THEN make dinner (unless I want to wait until 8 pm to start cooking with him). Â Also, boys don’t seem to realize how dirty things are so I also do most of the cleaning. Â I make a point to stop on the weekends and spend two days going on day trips or playing Monopoly.
4. What’s your favorite thing to make or do when you’re not running your business?
I have this odd obsession with baking right now so I absolutely love to just peek in the pantry and whip up something crazy. Â I’m also interested in vegan cooking and adding whole wheat to everything. Â (For the most part I just don’t tell my boyfriend what went into the desserts. Â Haha.)
