Pinch Me Pendant for St. Patrick’s Day

March 3, 2014 2 Comments

Pinch Me Pendant for St. Patrick's Day

Maybe everyone is not into St. Patrick’s Day, but I have a grandma who’s name is literally Mary Helen – there’s a wee bit of Irish in my family. I know that being Irish is supposed to automatically make a person pinch proof, but sometimes it’s easier to wear a bit of green to avoid having to explain – after being pinched – that I’m, in fact, of Irish descent. Today’s easy metal stamping DIY takes just minutes to make and is super cute. It’s also a little more subtle than a giant Kiss Me, I’m Irish button, right? :)

Supplies

shamrock-shaped stamping blank
metal stamping alphabet
metal stamping block
masking tape
hammer
green permanent marker
necklace chain
three jump rings
lobster clasp
jewelry pliers
rubbing alcohol
paper towel
ruler (optional)

Pinch Me Pendant for St. Patrick's Day

Directions

Begin by taping your shamrock blank to a metal stamping block. If you want your letters to be super straight, you can use a ruler and a marker to mark the blank’s center point and where to place other letters.

Grab your hammer and the letters p-i-n-c-h-m-e from your metal stamping alphabet.

Carefully align (or not – I decided to be more loosey goosey on mine for fun) your letters, beginning at the center of each word, and hammer them into your blank. New to metal stamping? Check out my metal stamping 101 tutorial and metal stamping 201 tutorial for tips & tricks.

When your letters are stamped, color them in with a green permanent marker. Quickly rub off the excess ink with a rubbing alcohol-soaked paper towel, leaving ink in the grooves created by each stamped letter.

Attach your finished pendant to some jewelry chain with a jump ring, and attach a jump ring to each end of the chain, also attaching a lobster clasp to one of the jump rings.

Voila! That’s it – a super simple St. Patrick’s day accessory that doesn’t screeeaaam: I’M WEARING GREEN TODAY, YOU GUYS!

“You’re telling me words can be pronounced in “You’re telling me words can be pronounced in different ways and mean the same things?!” 👀 Posting this here, just to make it clear: when anyone says skayne, skeen, or skyne, it can be safely assumed we’re talking about a bundle o’ yarn, a SKEIN. It’s not necessary to shame someone for using a word that is known to have MULTIPLE common pronunciations. 🧶

Can you plz comment sharing how you say SKEIN and where you learned it? The OED happens to say SKAYNE, but it’s not a personal attack if someone says SKEEN and you say SKYNE or even Saskatoon. I’m legitimately curious. We don’t all knit or crochet the same way, and craft evolves a bit like language - it is passed on. There is so much value in having conversations about & embracing these variations! ✌🏻

Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather than yarn. Here’s the latest mediocre-but-improving result of my slow quest to learn to set vintage inspired curls. 💇🏼‍♀️ I’m hoping to be able to wash my hair less using a regular vintage set, but we’ll see if it ends up being practical. 😆 Hair frustrates me so much more than crafts!

Do you also style your hair using vintage methods? If you have any tips for vintage hair styling or good resources to share, please do!
