Plaid Super Scarf

Knit this super cozy scarf throughout the fall to keep you warm this winter! | Plaid Super Scarf by Heidi Gustad for AllFreeKnitting

My newest pattern was released this week online at AllFreeKnitting. Measuring in at one foot by 12 feet, the Plaid Super Scarf lives up to its name! The Craft Yarn Council launched a new initiative yesterday for fall, calling on yarn crafters to jump on this season’s hottest trend – the super scarf. Super scarves are fun – they can be wrapped around (and around) you for limitless layering potential when it’s mega cold, and they can double as a wrap shawl or throw. After all, you’re putting in the time to knit ’em, why not make the finished piece do double duty?

The pattern for my Plaid Super Scarf is available for free on AllFreeKnitting. It features an edge that alternates between colors A and B for some added elegance inspired by Latvian braids. The repeating plaid motif used throughout is a fun one. It uses slipped stitches and the simplest stranded colorwork to create a knit plaid that looks like it was created on a weaving loom.

New to knitting plaid? I’ve got a video to help you master this technique – and if you tackle the super scarf, you’ll for sure have it down after knitting twelve feet of it!

Are you up to the challenge? Right now it’s a bit warm in my neck of the woods, but it’s the perfect time to cast on this bad boy and have yourself a gorgeous piece to wear for winter. As a designer, I’m always crafting projects for a season 6 or more months out. My deadline for this wooly scarf was mid-July! So as usual, I was the weirdo hauling 6 skeins of wool yarn around Chicago as I plugged away on my piece. The highlight had to have been working on the Plaid Super Scarf in the middle of a music festival – here’s the proof!

Being a knit designer means you get to be the weirdo knitting wool plaid in the middle of July at a music festival. 💁🏼😆🇺🇸✂️🙌🏻 #handsoccupied #lifeway #kefir #p4k #pitchfork #knitting #knit #knitdesign #placesyoucanknit #knitonthego

Casting on a ginormous knitting or crochet project might seem a bit daunting, but another reason to try my or any one of the other super scarves released this week is your pocketbook. The Plaid Super Scarf was designed with 6 skeins of Patons Classic Wool Roving, which retails for around $7. Even without coupons, you can make yourself this whole scarf for $42! Compare that to the retail price of the average store bought, haute couture super scarf, and you’ve got yourself a fashion staple for a steal.

I also love super long scarves!!! I love your term “Super Scarves!” This one certainly is. I’m never tried that stitch pattern, so thanks for the tutorial.

Yeah, it’s so fun to knit! Really a different technique than one you come across every day, which is lovely. :)

This is the cutest pattern, I think that I will start out with a swatch and build up to the super scarf.
