Make an adorable little snowman ornament, complete with a top hat, mini scarf, and a teensy little carrot nose. Practice your amigurumi skills with this free pattern!

For awhile I really thought about shifting away from doing ornaments again this year, but then I looked through my notes and realized I had SO many more ideas I wanted to keep exploring. So why not go with it and bring you a third holiday season in a row filled with cute knit & crochet ornaments. By the time Christmas arrives in a few weeks, you’ll have 4 new free patterns to add to your tree!

Get an inexpensive, printable, ad-free PDF of this pattern here, or you can continue scrolling to find the blog version of the pattern.

In the past, we’ve called these the 12 ornaments of Christmas, but we’re about to blow way past that 12 count and hit a (somewhat insane) 20 total designs. There may be plans in the works for even more come next year, but for now, you just have to wait and see! For newbies, here’s what the past couple years’ ornaments look like, thanks to my mild obsession with designing knit & crochet holiday icons. :)

Year One (2015):

Check out the 12 ornaments of Christmas from Hands Occupied for free knitting and crochet patterns, yarn craft tutorials and clever holiday inspiration!

Year Two (2016):

Knit or crochet some adorable ornaments to trim your tree! Get your hands on 12 free knit and crochet patterns for Christmas ornaments. Each ornament doubles as a great gift topper & stocking stuffer!
Our first ornament this year is an adorable little snowman, complete with a top hat, mini scarf, and a teensy little carrot nose. The body is crocheted in a single, asymmetrical hourglass shape using white yarn, and this little dude’s accessories are made separately and sewn on to finish. This snowman has already become one of my favorites in this multi-year series. I don’t know if it’s the fact that he looks more humanish than your average peppermint or Christmas tree ornament, but we’ll keep him!

Don’t forget to check back here every Monday until Christmas for three more free patterns, featuring both knit & crochet. :)

My wardrobe could use another handmade sweater - I’m thinking something simple, seamed and with a decent amount of ease for potentially wearing tucked in with jeans or skirts. 🤔

In knitting, there are a few common knitting styles. Most often you’re going to encounter continental style and English (throwing) style on your knitting journey. I recently had an old video teaching continental style get a lot of views. Based on the comments, it was clear the people wanted to also see a throwing tutorial, so here you go! 🧶
.
Please note that there is a LOT of variation in knitting styles, and one isn’t necessarily better than another. Most often, I’ve found it comes down to two things: how you were taught and whether or not you’re really into colorwork knitting (which can involve a mix of styles).

Longer-term knitters who’ve made it this far: do you prefer one over the other? And why?

I read recently that tiktok and Instagram are being used as search engines more and more. 🤔 I thought since I’m going to all the work of making tutorials on YouTube, I should experiment with making a quick version of them for other platforms. There are obvious teaching limitations to vertical video, short-form content like this, but I think I covered the gist of this cast on in a minute. The YouTube version also covers how to unzip this cast on because there was time for it 👍🏻 L1nk is in my profile.
.
I’m very much looking for feedback as I continue to make instructional knitting & craft videos. Sometimes good tutorials are hard to find, and (ideally polite) feedback helps me improve.

The post covers what provisional cast ons are & how they differ, and the video covers how to work a one-step provisional cast on using scrap yarn and a crochet hook. (This is a great one to save for future reference.)

I learned several names for this method while researching this video & post. Crochet provisional cast on, one-step cast on, scrap yarn cast on - if you know even more names for this technique, please share!
