The Ultimate Mother’s Day Gift Basket

May 1, 2014 1 Comment

The Ultimate Mother's Day Gift Basket at Hands Occupied

What woman doesn’t love wine, chocolate, and a good book? When I found out I’d be teaming up with Dove® to design a Mother’s Day gift, I immediately texted my mom to get her input. She literally had their dark chocolate almond Promises in her purse when I texted. “That’s the good stuff!!” was her initial reaction. :) According to my mom, this chocolate goes great with red wine, so I figured I better listen to my mom and make a mother’s day gift the woman REALLY wants!

So, wine and chocolate is a starting point, but to make Mom’s gift basket extra special, I wanted to add a couple personal touches, and for me, that’s a great book I think she’d like, as well as a handmade gift that will for sure last longer than the wine and chocolate – some monogrammed (momogrammed?) stenciled wine glasses just for her. Read on for how to make the glasses and how to make the basket come together!

Supplies

Stenciled stemless wine glasses

stemless wine glasses
adhesive stencils
glass paint
sponge spouncers
waxed paper or silicone craft mat

The basket

a good book  (in this case, Once Upon A River by Bonnie Jo Campbell)
a bottle of red wine
Dove® Dark Chocolate
a pretty gift basket
recycled paper packing material

Directions

Start with a clean and dry wine glass, and place an adhesive stencil on your glass, using the top edge to line the stencil up straight. Since you’re working with a curved surface, you’ll have to be careful when placing it.

You’ll see that I have some folds over the curved sections of my glass, which is inevitable and ok! You just have to apply paint more carefully over those areas to avoid paint getting under the stencil, messing up the design.

To apply your glass paint, dab your sponge spouncer in the glass paint, and wipe off some of the excess paint before applying it to your stencil. Excess paint is the number 1 way to end up with paint leakage while stenciling. :)

After you’ve painted 1-2 layers of glass paint onto your glass, carefully peel away the stencil while it’s still wet. Then, if you want to add another stencil, like I did with my mom’s first initial C below, just wait for the first stencil you painted to dry before adding the second. So easy! So cute!

How delicious does the basket look all put together? Two of the glasses have my mom’s first initial and a leaf design on them, and the others say the word mom. Then, I’ve got a nice bottle of wine, the book, a few large bars of Dove’s Silky Smooth Dark Chocolate, and it’s all topped with handfuls of Dove Promises candies.

How to do a one-step provisional knitting cast on How to do a one-step provisional knitting cast on / a.k.a. crochet provisional cast on, scrap yarn cast on

I read recently that tiktok and Instagram are being used as search engines more and more. 🤔 I thought since I’m going to all the work of making tutorials on YouTube, I should experiment with making a quick version of them for other platforms. There are obvious teaching limitations to vertical video, short-form content like this, but I think I covered the gist of this cast on in a minute. The YouTube version also covers how to unzip this cast on because there was time for it 👍🏻 L1nk is in my profile.
.
I’m very much looking for feedback as I continue to make instructional knitting & craft videos. Sometimes good tutorials are hard to find, and (ideally polite) feedback helps me improve.

For the first time in a long time, there’s a new For the first time in a long time, there’s a new tutorial from Hands Occupied! 🎉 The video is live on YouTube & the blog.

The post covers what provisional cast ons are & how they differ, and the video covers how to work a one-step provisional cast on using scrap yarn and a crochet hook. (This is a great one to save for future reference.)
.
I learned several names for this method while researching this video & post. Crochet provisional cast on, one-step cast on, scrap yarn cast on - if you know even more names for this technique, please share!

Peg boards and craft room organization go together Peg boards and craft room organization go together like peanut butter and jelly. So, as you can see, do latch hook tools and screwdriver organizers! 🪛
.
I think this trick translates to any tool with a thick handle, so leather working tools, punch needles, print making tools, etc. should work! What other tools am I, a needlecrafter, blanking on right now?

Pegboard storage is my favorite for craft supplies Pegboard storage is my favorite for craft supplies, so getting a few hung in my new studio has been a priority. Here’s my first attempt. 🔨
.
Details: This pegboard panel is for organizing my knitting needles, latch hook tools, sewing thread, etc. It doesn’t need to hold much weight, so I didn’t anchor this into a stud - just used basic drywall anchors. I’ve also got a set of two 2’x4’ panels for another spot in my studio, and those will need a stud/more than 3 drywall anchors. Wish me luck!
