Uneek Worsted Yarn Review & Giveaway

May 14, 2018 2 Comments

Urth's Uneek Worsted yarn is a funky and vibrant yarn ideal for color lovers. This self-striping beauty lends itself to so many fun knit & crochet projects!
I recently discovered a yarn company called Urth Yarns. They have a variety of interesting yarns, but the Uneek line of yarns caught my attention in particular. A color freak, of course these self-striping, hand-dyed merino yarns drew me in, so I gave Uneek Worsted a try. The color combinations are funky and vibrant, giving crafters color changes to look forward to, even in simple designs (without any ends to weave in). Available in fingering, worsted, chunky, and sock weights, there are several options to choose from.

As a company, Urth Yarns seems to have their environmental priorities in order, which is always great to see in a yarn company. Their yarns are, according to their website, “dyed and prepared by skilled hands of women at [their] studios in Mersin and Istanbul.” They also have a #KnitOnePlantOne initiative, as part of Trees for the Future.

The Yarn: Urth Uneek Worsted

Colorway pictured: 4009
Skein details:
 100g / 3.5 oz. skeins / 220 yds / 200m / 100% extra fine merino wool / worsted weight
Knitting needles: US 8, 5 mm / 15 stitches & 21 rows over 4 inches
Crochet hook: US I-9, 5.5 mm / 15 sc & 18 rows over 4 inches
Cons: I picked this colorway for its boldness, but it’s worth noting that the inside of the skein is several shades lighter (see the how the yarn looks when balled at the top of this post) than the outside of the skein. On the other hand, that lighter color in the latter part of the skein could make working simple stitch patterns a bit more interesting.
Pros: The first part of the skein’s bold colors are really saturated, which is always super fun! When I blocked my swatches, the water didn’t turn any sort of blue or brown, which can happen if a yarn is overdyed to appear more bold. If you like quality yarn AND great color choices, Urth’s Uneek yarn line is definitely worth a look!
Pattern Ideas: This yarn is perfect for something like the Top Notched Shawl, a knitting pattern designed to work at any gauge and show off beautiful yarns! And if we’re talking crochet, the Round Granny Cushion fits the bill for showing off this self-striping stunner in a one skein project.

I’m curious Heidi, where do you get your yarn?
Do you do your own dyeing?

      Hi Kay!
I’m not a dyer, but I get yarn from local yarn shops, online (Webs, & Eat Sleep Knit are favorites), and from big box stores (most often JoAnn) when I’m looking for yarns they carry. :)
      Best,
      Heidi

How to convert a closet into WIPs storage with jus How to convert a closet into WIPs storage with just a few supplies ✂️
.
When I was a librarian, we would use these hanging bags to circulate books with audiobook CDs. They came to mind when I wanted to develop a filing cabinet-like system for my differently-sized WIPs. To fit in my studio closet, a standard bedroom closet, they just needed custom hangers. 🤙🏻
.
HOW TO MAKE THE HANGERS
1. Carefully cut approx. a 9” (23 cm) length of flexible 3 mm aluminum wire.
2. Near the end of a large knitting needle or dowel, wrap the wire around it as you would a twist tie.
3. Bend the other end into a hook shape, perpendicular to the circle shape you just created.
4. Hang like a hanger in a closet, as shown.

.
What makes these yarns sisters is that, while dyed differently, they’re the same weight and come in intentionally coordinating color palettes. For my review, I opted for a sky-inspired combo of Sami in Natural and Marla in Nube. 🌧️

In this video, you can see how the Intarsia Flower Pillow pattern knits up - two flat panels, one with intarsia, both are blocked, and then they’re seamed. Find the pattern on @hi.ravelry & my website, just search Intarsia Flower Pillow. 🌸
.
P.S. I’m really smiling in this video while seaming the pillow, so I guess I’m proving last week’s claim that I truly enjoy that sometimes-dreaded task. 😆🫣

Have you ever used lifted increases? I used M1’s almost exclusively for a long time when I needed to inc between stitches, but when I designed the Intarsia Flower Pillow pattern, I needed something that would allow me to increase a lot near my cast on, and M1’s resulted in edge curling. The more you know! 🌈

Lessons learned: 1️⃣ Trying to knit around 2 toddlers, 2 cats & 2 large dogs is pretty hard. 2️⃣ I learned during water color time that pink and black make “colorful black.” 🩷🖤 3️⃣ Toddlers do NOT care about your rainbow sorting of their toys. 4️⃣ Toddlers are very good at finding mischief in a very short amount of time, what a surprise. 😂
