12 Ornaments of Christmas Roundup

December 24, 2015 6 Comments

Check out the 12 ornaments of Christmas from Hands Occupied for free knitting and crochet patterns, yarn craft tutorials and clever holiday inspiration!

I can’t believe it’s Christmas Eve! That means it’s time to put the 12 ornaments of Christmas series to bed for the year. Designing, photographing and sharing these 12 yarn craft ornament ideas has been really fun and even a little challenging in the best way. I’ll definitely have to do another ornament series next year.

The idea I had going into designing these ornaments was to do something different. In that spirit, I bought two packs of cotton Lion Brand’s Bonbons yarn to work with since the colors are bold and not your traditional Christmas colors. The color options in the bonbons seemed like they’d offer a fun take on Christmas ornaments that would stand out from the usual tinsel-covered (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) ideas you see leading up to Christmas. The other key to these was that most of them are stuffed and seamed, which was a nice little challenge and a departure style-wise for me as a designer.

In the end, I hope you’ve enjoyed watching this series unfold. If you have any ideas for next year’s series, any ideas you’d like to see, please holler in the comments. And even if it’s July of next year, continue to share your takes on these patterns using #handsoccupiedhohoho on Instagram!

“You’re telling me words can be pronounced in “You’re telling me words can be pronounced in different ways and mean the same things?!” 👀 Posting this here, just to make it clear: when anyone says skayne, skeen, or skyne, it can be safely assumed we’re talking about a bundle o’ yarn, a SKEIN. It’s not necessary to shame someone for using a word that is known to have MULTIPLE common pronunciations. 🧶
.
.
Can you plz comment sharing how you say SKEIN and where you learned it? The OED happens to say SKAYNE, but it’s not a personal attack if someone says SKEEN and you say SKYNE or even Saskatoon. I’m legitimately curious. We don’t all knit or crochet the same way, and craft evolves a bit like language - it is passed on. There is so much value in having conversations about & embracing these variations! ✌🏻

Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather than yarn. Here’s the latest mediocre-but-improving result of my slow quest to learn to set vintage inspired curls. 💇🏼‍♀️ I’m hoping to be able to wash my hair less using a regular vintage set, but we’ll see if it ends up being practical. 😆 Hair frustrates me so much more than crafts!
.
Do you also style your hair using vintage methods? If you have any tips for vintage hair styling or good resources to share, please do!
