Knit Holiday Ornaments Three Ways

Add some handmade cuteness to your Christmas tree this year - knit up a colorful ornament for your tree with one of these three free patterns.
Aren’t these fun? This new trio of knit ornament patterns are all about adding pops of color to your Christmas tree. This star, heart and bauble are inspired by classic Christmas ornaments, and are the biggest of the ornament series. All of these can be customized with any color combination you choose, so consider today’s free patterns a great starting point to letting your creativity fly this season. :)

Knit Bauble Ornament

Baubles are, of course, the definitive Christmas ornament. You can find them in an infinite number of styles. This purple and white take on the classic bauble is a way to add nontraditional color to your holiday decor. Plus, you can easily customize this pattern with any design you like if you play around with rows 7 and 8. It’s so easy to make this ornament your own!

Skill level: easy

Supplies
2 packs Lion Brand Yarn Bonbons in Beach, which comes with 8 mini skeins. – You need 2 skeins of purple and less than a skein of white to complete the ornament.
size US 3 (3.25 mm) knitting needles
4 stitch markers
scissors
tapestry needle
poly-fil
scrap ribbon
sewing needle & thread

Abbreviations & Terms
CO – cast on
sts – stitches
clr – color (color A is purple and B is white in the pictured bauble)
rnd – round
M1R – make 1 right. Here’s a tutorial.
pm – place marker
M1L – make 1 left. Here’s a tutorial.
rep from * – repeat the instructions following the asterisk as directed
(X sts) – X indicates the number of sts that will now be on your needle
sm – slip marker
rep – repeat
ssk – slip one as if to k, slip one as if to p, k both sts together
k2tog – knit 2 sts together
BO – bind off

Gauge & dimensions: 22 sts & 28 rows over 4 inches, knit in stockinette stitch. The bauble measures about 8.5 inches in circumference.

The Pattern

Increase Section
CO 8 sts in clr A and join into rnd.
rnds 1-3. k8.
rnd 4. *k1, M1R, pm, k1, M1L; rep from * 4 times. (16 sts)

rnd 5. k 16.
rnd 6. *k to m, m1R, sm, k1, m1L; rep from * 4 times (24 sts)
Rep 5-6 to 56 sts.

Colorwork Section
rnd 7. *k1A, k1B; rep from * 28 times.
rnd 8. *k1B, k1A; rep from * 28 times.
rnds 9-12. Rep rnds 7-8.
Cut Clr B, leaving a 4-6” tail.

Decrease Section
rnd 13. k56A.
rnd 14. *k to 2 sts before m, ssk, sm, k1, k2tog; rep from * 4 times, k to end of rnd. (46 sts)
Rep 13-14 until 16 sts remain. Stuff ornament with poly-fil.
rnd 15. k 16.
rnd 16. *ssk, k2tog; rep from * 4 times. (8 sts)
rnd 17. k8.
Break yarn, leaving a 4-6” tail. Draw tail through remaining sts to secure.

Finishing
Weave in all ends. Using a needle & thread, sew a scrap of ribbon to the top of your finished ornament to hang.
