Knit Star Ornament & The 12 Ornaments of Christmas

November 12, 2015 9 Comments

Knit Star Ornament - Click through for a free knitting pattern for this cute star ornament, which also makes a great tree star, gift topper or baby toy!
Christmas is coming up, and fast! In just about 6 weeks, it will already be the big day. To celebrate the holiday this year, I thought it would be fun to give you guys a present – or really 12. Between now and December 25, I’m going to share 12 ornaments for Christmas, all of which will be a free knitting pattern, crochet pattern or a yarn craft. I’ve got some great ideas planned for this that I’m super excited about, so let’s kick things off with a sweet, knitted star.

(I figured a star would be festive without being too festive, since it’s still not yet Thanksgiving. I’ll hold off on the mega Christmas vibes as much as possible until it’s officially Christmas season.)

Get an inexpensive, printable, ad-free PDF of this pattern here, or you can continue scrolling to see the pattern now.

Finishing
Using the mattress stitch, sew 5 diamonds each into two stars (a front and a back). Then sew both stars together all the way around, stuffing with poly-fil as you go. Using a needle & thread, sew a scrap of ribbon to the back of your finished ornament to hang.

Each of the star leg diamonds looks like this, kind of like a kite. The mattress stitch you use to join all of the pieces works so well to make the ten sections of the star appear as if they were knit as a single piece. If you’re new to the mattress stitch, you can check out this video tutorial I did to learn how.

Thanks for the pattern, very cool!!

Don’t you mean repeat rows 1 AND 4? My first attempt at the diamond had a much longer “bottom” and did not look like the picture….

I think about the wrong side of my intarsia knitti I think about the wrong side of my intarsia knitting kind of like some embroiderers do: I get (probably too) excited when the back’s neat and tidy. Are you this way? Is it just me?
.
Pictured is the wrong side of a large primary color intarsia swatch I knit for an upcoming design in @brooklyntweed Arbor. When I pulled it from my studio, I thanked my former self for talking the time to knit, weave in ends, & block a clean swatch already. As critical as they are, I’m excited to not have to make one today. I’ll advocate for swatching all day long, but I won’t pretend it’s like the funnest step in the process! 😆🧶

There are a few reasons 90% of my work is done in primary colors, & this is one of them! Lucky for me and my tear ducts, this secret monochromatic design project is off the needles. Just blocking, seaming, & then grading the thing before I can ship it off to make my deadline. 🤙🏻
Today’s knitting vocabulary words: deadline isla Today’s knitting vocabulary words: deadline island & intarsia lock. Have you run across these terms before?
.
If there’s interest, I can share more examples of how to wrangle intarsia locks in a future video. With all of the intarsia designs in my queue, examples are sure to present themselves. 😅🧶
