Other People’s Houses Shawl pattern / RALKAL Kickoff!!

October 10, 2016 6 Comments

Knit the Other People's Houses Shawl - this first time shawl-friendly free pattern is versatile and can be knit with any yarn.

It’s time to knit along with your fellow yarn loving bibliophiles! You can finally see a full view of the Other People’s Houses Shawl (above), crack open or press play on your copies of The Smell of Other People’s Houses, and tuck in for the first Read Along Knit Along on Hands Occupied. Who’s excited?

How this is going to work

To recap, between now and October 31, we’ll be reading The Smell of Other People’s Houses by Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock and knitting the free pattern (found below!) for the Other People’s Houses Shawl by yours truly. Whether that’s alternating between reading a physical copy of the book or listening to it on audiobook while knitting at the same time, the timeline runs today through the end of the month.

We’ll be discussing the book in the Hands Occupied Ravelry Group throughout the knit along, and I’ll be in the group daily to chat and see what you think. Pacing-wise, this book is a fast read, but I’ve made threads for each section of the book. The book’s sections are designated by season, so there are threads for spring, summer, fall and winter. This will help us chat about the book freely, even if we’re not all finished with the whole book.

Prizes!

Other than, you know, the joy of reading and knitting a free pattern, on to additional fun stuff! As I mentioned in the announcement post, there are going to be some prizes for this knit along. :) I’ve got a couple skeins of yarn from Louet North America (the yarn I designed this pattern with!), some lotion bars for keeping your hands soft during marathon knit sessions, and more prizes to be announced soon! By joining or already being a member of the Hands Occupied Ravelry Group, you’re eligible to enter the raffle, and you’ll be able to get two more chances to win: one for finishing your shawl by October 31, and one for finishing the book on time too. The pattern is a real relaxer of a knit, and the book is pretty quick. With winter holidays looming, I wanted to make sure the first RALKAL was easy and no stress! :)

Any questions? Holler in the comments. Throughout the RALKAL, I’ll be posting tutorials for techniques featured in the shawl, so if you find yourself stumped, let me know. I might just have a video planned to help you out!

Disclaimer: If you find what you believe is a typo, please let me know! This is a free pattern and I do my best to edit and proofread, but as a human, I’m imperfect. Not only am I capable of mistakes, I also have feelings. Just let me know what you believe is up, and I’ll look into it asap. :)

Do you have any alternate yarn suggestions? I was looking at sport weight yarns in the stores today (okay, only Joanns and Michaels, the nice yarn stores near me are closed on Mondays) and didn’t find sport weight (that’s #3, right?) where 100 grams equaled around 270 yards. Fingers crossed I can find something nice on Tuesday so I can get started! Thanks for the support before I’ve even started – at least I have the audiobook downloaded from the library!

Me again! I don’t have my yarn yet, but a question about the pattern (since I’m being good and reading it before I start) – in Shawl Setup row 3, there are 4 times you slip a marker – but I only see 2 markers being placed in row 1, at the beginning and end of the row (and none in row 2). Reading on into the Drop Stitch section it also has 4 “sl m” in each row. Maybe the 2 middle “sl m” in setup row 3 are supposed to be “pm” to get to 4 markers in total?
Thank you, it looks like a lovely pattern!

      Hi Debbie,

Thanks so much for doing your knitting due diligence! And for being so nice in spotting my error. Yes! I was missing two pm’s in row 1 (sorry, guys!!). I’ve updated it from, “1. sl 1 wyif, k1, pm, (yo, k1) 3 times, yo, pm, k1, k1 tbl.” to what it reads now, which is:

      1. sl 1 wyif, k1, pm, yo, k1, yo, pm, k1, pm, yo, k1, yo, pm, k1, k1 tbl.

      Big thank you to Debbie!

POV: Showing you how my new Bevelled Tank pattern POV: Showing you how my new Bevelled Tank pattern fits with no ease vs. 4” of positive ease. There’s a bit more length to the cotton (brighter color) sample, but both are cropped and feature shoulder seams designed to sit an inch back onto the shoulder instead of on top, giving it a little swing. Length is easily adjustable for folks looking for less of a crop.
.
Pattern: Bevelled Tank by @handsoccupied for @pompommag x @hobbii_yarn summer 2024. Available for free from Hobbii at the 🔗 in my profile.

Dress form is adjusted to a 36” chest and ~5’3”ish in height.
Human has a 40” chest and is 5’5”.
Both skirts are vintage.

Let’s talk about fit and ease! . During the Beve Let’s talk about fit and ease!
.
During the Bevelled Tank design process for @pompommag, I knit 2 samples using 2 different @KelbourneWoolens yarns. One was in Skipper (100% cotton, second photo) and the other was in Camper (100% 2 ply wool). The Skipper sample was knit for a 36” bust, which measures in at 40” with 4” of positive ease. And I knit the Camper Sample for my 40” bust with a 44” finished measurement. (BTW, I’m 5’5” for folks that find that measurement helpful in visualizing fit.)
.
Based on the size chart for the Bevelled Tank, that means I knit one size 3 sample and one size 4. As designed, I conveniently fit a size 4 as intended with 4” of positive ease. When I wear the 3, there is no ease at all because the garment and my body are both 40” in size. Comparing the 2 garments, you can see how the fiber content (cotton vs. wool) and fit (no ease vs. 4” of positive ease) makes a difference in the look and feel of the finished garment.
.
These samples are a great way to compare what ease looks like on different bodies. While I can fit both a size 3 and 4, the garment with no ease feels more like pajamas or a bralette when I wear it. On the other hand, when I wear the one with 4” of positive ease, I feel comfortable enough to wear it to work, even as a crop top. Plus, it leaves me with enough room to layer it with a nice button down if I’m not feeling the cropped look one day.
.
I’m curious - how would you style this tank? Would you modify it with a few stockinette rows for added length? I’m so curious now that this pattern is finally out in the world. :)

After a 6 month hiatus, I am happy to say I’m ba After a 6 month hiatus, I am happy to say I’m back with a brand new pattern in 9 sizes, and it’s FREE as part of @pompommag x @hobbii_yarn’s summer design collection! (Link is in my bio.)
.
In my December newsletter, I announced that I was soliciting test knitters for a pattern that had originally been selected for the summer ’24 issue of Pom Pom Quarterly magazine. However, the magazine ceased publication after its spring ’24 issue, leaving in-progress designs unpublished. (It happens.) As a result, I’d begun the long process of editing, testing, and photographing the pattern for independent release through the Hands Occupied pattern shop and Ravelry.
.
Before I was done with that process, Pom Pom Quarterly’s former editors reached out with an exciting proposal for the pattern. Post-magazine, they’ve begun to partner with yarn companies to produce high quality pattern collections. They wanted to include designs from the would-be current issue of Pom Pom Quarterly in a new collection for Hobbii yarn, including my Bevelled Tank. I worked with the same technical editors I would have for the magazine on this one, and as you can see from the photos, Pom Pom’s team did an amazing job of styling the garment to the beautiful standards they’re known for.
.
You can learn more about the pattern on my blog and get the free pattern from Hobbii yarn - links to both in my profile. I’ll post sizing info in the comments for quick reference too. 🧶

Frogging is a word in the knitting world that mean Frogging is a word in the knitting world that means to rip out your knitting. It’s called frogging because frogs say “ribbit,” and when you’re tearing out your knitting, you will “rip it” out, and that sounds like ribbit. No really. 🐸 Did you know this fun fact?
.
P.S. I did like this design concept, but to make the pattern more knitter friendly as well as more wearable, I am making some tweaks to the construction. Excited to share when it’s ready! 🥰🧶
