The Ruby Stole is a great way to master simple short rows, twisted stitches and basic lace, all in a single skein pattern. The three techniques combine elegantly to form a pear-shaped motif inspired by one of the many shapes rubies take. Throughout this pattern, this motif adds texture and dimensionality to a straightforward garment silhouette. For added visual interest, the cast on edge features subtle scallops, and an additional short row section completes the bind off edge with a trio of points.

If this pattern looks familiar, you’re not imagining things! This pattern was first published in the June 2017 issue of I Like Knitting. Now that the rights have reverted back to me, I’ve updated the pattern and added it to the Hands Occupied Pattern Shop. Before you could only get this bad boy in the magazine, and now you can get it all by itself! In addition to being newly updated and added to the pattern shop, kits of this pattern will be available this weekend at Vogue Knitting Live New York. Kits featuring this pattern & yarn from Mrs. Crosby will be available in the Knitted Purl booth.

For the indie release, I knitted an updated sample of the Ruby Stole in a semi-solid color of the same yarn this pattern was first designed with, Mrs. Crosby Satchel. The semi-solid is a lovely purple called Wild Huckleberry that really shows off all of the texture throughout this design. If you’re curious what the dramatic red and black colorway is called, it’s Scarlet Ibis.

PS: In the coming months, I have several more patterns to give the same treatment. Folks who want to get their hands on other patterns they’ve seen plugged as part of various magazines and collections (like the Abie’s Lace Shawl, English Lace Scarf, Purple Haze Messenger Bag, Leucadia Shawl, and more!) will be able to grab them as individual patterns. Stay tuned. :)

Shout out to Mrs. Crosby for providing yarn support for this design and its samples.

“You’re telling me words can be pronounced in “You’re telling me words can be pronounced in different ways and mean the same things?!” 👀 Posting this here, just to make it clear: when anyone says skayne, skeen, or skyne, it can be safely assumed we’re talking about a bundle o’ yarn, a SKEIN. It’s not necessary to shame someone for using a word that is known to have MULTIPLE common pronunciations. 🧶
.
.
Can you plz comment sharing how you say SKEIN and where you learned it? The OED happens to say SKAYNE, but it’s not a personal attack if someone says SKEEN and you say SKYNE or even Saskatoon. I’m legitimately curious. We don’t all knit or crochet the same way, and craft evolves a bit like language - it is passed on. There is so much value in having conversations about & embracing these variations! ✌🏻

Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather than yarn. Here’s the latest mediocre-but-improving result of my slow quest to learn to set vintage inspired curls. 💇🏼‍♀️ I’m hoping to be able to wash my hair less using a regular vintage set, but we’ll see if it ends up being practical. 😆 Hair frustrates me so much more than crafts!

Do you also style your hair using vintage methods? If you have any tips for vintage hair styling or good resources to share, please do!
