Sponsor Spotlight - May 2016, Hands Occupied

Yarnthology / Bijou Basin Ranch / Feel Good Yarn Co.

Today we’re taking a look at three yarn industry companies I’ve had the pleasure of designing for. All three of these have become favorites of mine. I fee like I always say this about yarn companies, but everyone I know who works for them is honestly really nice and passionate about what they do. Maybe that’s why I love the yarn world so much. None of us make a lot of money, so we all are inspired to do this – whether its make yarn, sell yarn, or design with it – from a place of passion, which is really special.

Learn how to knit a chain edge, an easy knitting trick to make your finished projects look amazing!

First up, we’ve got Feel Good Yarn Company, most known for its SilverSpun yarn that’s literally made with silver. Conductive and delightfully springy, Feel Good’s yarns are so fun to work with. The yarn really offers a unique experience from a knitting perspective, and its conductive properties give designers like yours truly an opportunity to get creative in an era of touchscreen devices.

The Top Notched Shawl - Get your hands on this fun, free & easy pattern for a square knit shawl, perfect to show off those fancy, one-skein yarns you haven't quite found the right use for!

I will never stop telling you all how much I love Bijou Basin Ranch. The owners are the nicest folks, they work with some of the most passionate dyers, their Tibetan yak fiber is 100% sustainably harvested, and they work hard to support all sorts of indie folks in the needlearts industry. Right now, they’ve got some new indie-dyed colorways available, and using HANDSOCCUPIED, you can get free shipping at checkout. What’s not to love?

Meet the Sixth Degree Shawl. Cast on this gorgeous, free pattern designed with American made, ethically-sourced yarn!

Last but not least, we’ve got the lovely and earth-friendly Yarnthology. You can get a full run-down of how awesome they are in my recent review of their site, but suffice it to say that by letting shoppers search for yarn by what they value (everything from American made to vegan), they’ve really upped the ante when it comes to being role models in the yarn world. You should check them out – which is easy since you can get 15% off sitewide and free shipping using HANDSOCCUPIED. Isn’t that nice? ;)

“You’re telling me words can be pronounced in “You’re telling me words can be pronounced in different ways and mean the same things?!” 👀 Posting this here, just to make it clear: when anyone says skayne, skeen, or skyne, it can be safely assumed we’re talking about a bundle o’ yarn, a SKEIN. It’s not necessary to shame someone for using a word that is known to have MULTIPLE common pronunciations. 🧶
.
.
Can you plz comment sharing how you say SKEIN and where you learned it? The OED happens to say SKAYNE, but it’s not a personal attack if someone says SKEEN and you say SKYNE or even Saskatoon. I’m legitimately curious. We don’t all knit or crochet the same way, and craft evolves a bit like language - it is passed on. There is so much value in having conversations about & embracing these variations! ✌🏻

Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather than yarn. Here’s the latest mediocre-but-improving result of my slow quest to learn to set vintage inspired curls. 💇🏼‍♀️ I’m hoping to be able to wash my hair less using a regular vintage set, but we’ll see if it ends up being practical. 😆 Hair frustrates me so much more than crafts!

Do you also style your hair using vintage methods? If you have any tips for vintage hair styling or good resources to share, please do!
