Things to Knit

July 27, 2015 2 Comments

10 of the most inspiring knitting patterns for late summer - click through for how to get your hands on them all!

It’s that time again – time to take a look at patterns published in the past month and drool over my favorites. Items sometimes make this list because they use clever techniques for construction, sometimes because they combine stitches/colors/yarns in eye-catching ways, and sometimes they make it because they just make me smile. Let’s take a look at my July faves!

Anthro by Hanna Maciejewska

Anthro by Hanna Maciejewska

Why I love it: That cable detail placed at the center back. Done. Sold. That detail is how shaping is accomplished for the waist, which is genius. And using a similar cable detail on the cuffs? So good.
Sinuous Pencil Scarf by Alice Humbracht

Why I love it: Look at it! There’s nothing wrong with a cute knitting project for back to school season.

Kith by Justyna Lorkowska

Why I love it: The asymmetrical yellow accents, of course! Coupled with the contrasting, neutral stripes, this piece packs a visual punch.

Mookari by Ambah

Why I love it: The bias knit combined with simple garter and lace panels are not only pretty, but they make this an advanced beginner-friendly project that’s great for stepping up your skills.

Tartelette by Lisa Chemery

Why I love it: Some of it is proooobabbly the adorable toddler modeling the sweater, but I have other reasons for loving this piece. Seed stitch combined with a cable edging you can’t see in this shot (but should totally click through to check out), make this a sweater I’ll be gifting my friends’ babies as soon as they’re big enough.

Why I love it: There aren’t enough pretty mesh knitting projects in the world. That’s it!

Chilkat Cowl by Rosemary Hill

Why I love it: Lace panels (clearly a theme of this month’s pattern releases!) combined with jogless stripes and an awesome drawstring are all things I’m loving in knitting right now.

Starry Summer Nights by Iris Schreier

Why I love it: This is what I call a summer shawl! Particularly this brightly colored sample.

The Turtles' Journey Shawl by Heather Anderson

Why I love it: Obviously, look at this turtle motif! I’m going to have to bookmark that for future reference for sure.

Whippet by Anke Strick

Why I love it: A simple, subtle silhouette combined with placed lace across the body and sleeves make this a good summer cardigan with great breathability.

“You’re telling me words can be pronounced in “You’re telling me words can be pronounced in different ways and mean the same things?!” 👀 Posting this here, just to make it clear: when anyone says skayne, skeen, or skyne, it can be safely assumed we’re talking about a bundle o’ yarn, a SKEIN. It’s not necessary to shame someone for using a word that is known to have MULTIPLE common pronunciations. 🧶
.
.
Can you plz comment sharing how you say SKEIN and where you learned it? The OED happens to say SKAYNE, but it’s not a personal attack if someone says SKEEN and you say SKYNE or even Saskatoon. I’m legitimately curious. We don’t all knit or crochet the same way, and craft evolves a bit like language - it is passed on. There is so much value in having conversations about & embracing these variations! ✌🏻

Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather than yarn. Here’s the latest mediocre-but-improving result of my slow quest to learn to set vintage inspired curls. 💇🏼‍♀️ I’m hoping to be able to wash my hair less using a regular vintage set, but we’ll see if it ends up being practical. 😆 Hair frustrates me so much more than crafts!

Do you also style your hair using vintage methods? If you have any tips for vintage hair styling or good resources to share, please do!
