Winter Cable Knit Beanie

November 14, 2016 4 Comments

Knit an adorable cable knit beanie for winter with this free pattern that comes in adult and children's sizes.
Who doesn’t love a good hat? Or a good bit of cabling? (I know, some people love looking at cabling more than actually knitting cables, which I understand. They’re just so pretty!) This new free pattern is one I designed for AllFreeKnitting, and I love it. It comes in adult and children’s sizes & features a video tutorial to help you get the hang of working through this pattern. Plus, the added touch of finishing with a two-color pom pom is cute!

Winter Cable Knit Beanie

Gauge: 4 stitches/inch knit in stockinette
Sizes: Children’s size is approx. 20 inches in circumference and 7.25 inches tall. The adult size is 22 inches around and 8.25 inches tall. To knit sizes not listed in the pattern, simply cast on a multiple of 8 stitches more or less. Your stitch count will alter accordingly.

Supplies
US size 9 double pointed or circular knitting needles (depending on your preference)
medium/worsted weight yarn (I used Stitch Nation Full O‘Sheep.)
Cable Needle
Yarn
Scissors
Tapestry needle or crochet hook for weaving in ends
pom pom maker (optional)

Abbreviations
CO – cast on
X(Y) – X indicates the number of sts for the child size, and Y indicates the number of sts needed for the adult size. If X(Y) sts are listed after a period in a given round, they indicate the number of sts that will be in that round once it has been worked.
sts – sts
rnd – round
pm – place marker
p – purl
k – knit
sl – slip
m – marker
rpt – repeat
ssk – slip 1 st as if to k, slip 1 as if to p, k 2 sts together
k2tog – k 2 sts together as one

The Pattern: Get the pattern here / check out the video below for tips & tricks for success!

The added bonus of watching this video is that you can see how I wrangle five double pointed needles (and a cable needle) to knit in the round old school style! (I learned to knit from my grandma and some old knitting books, so I’ll always love some good DPN action.) You can also knit this hat on the appropriately-sized circular knitting needle for your head size, or you can use a long circular needle for knitting in the round magic loop style.
