All Cables Cowl Pattern

February 18, 2014 1 Comment

All Cables Cowl Knitting Pattern at Hands Occupied

It thundersnowed in Chicago yesterday, which means winter knitting season isn’t quite over yet. Unlike my faux woven cowl from last month, today’s cowl features a series of small cabled stripes all the way around and is made with less bulky yarn. Also unlike that cowl, it breathes a little more, so it’s great for transitional weather. This cowl is knit in the round, so the cables end up vertical & the cowl is seamless. Literally seamless, actually, since it’s made with a single skein of yarn.  It’s my favorite color too, so I love wearing it to match my glasses.

Supplies

stitch markers
145 g of medium weight acrylic yarn, like good old Red Heart Super Saver
size 8 knitting needles (circular or double pointed)
cable needle
scissors
yarn needle or crochet hook for weaving in ends

Directions

I made this cowl about a year ago when I was sick & completely forgot to blog the pattern it until today. It’s made with acrylic yarn that’s proven to be pretty wear-resistant and washable (I just spot clean it). And the yarn was something I got for just ten cents at a rummage sale! I really can wear this with confidence and know it won’t be a big deal if I sneeze on it or leave it somewhere by accident.

Abbreviations

CO – cast on
sts – stitches
sl – slip
cn – cable needle
BO – bind off/cast off

The Pattern

CO 200 sts and join, placing a marker at your first stitch
rows 1 & 2. {k4, p4} across*
row 3. {sl 2 sts onto cn and hold in front, k2, k2 from cn, p4} across
row 4. {k4, p4} across
repeat rows 1 through 4 until you are nearly out of yarn
BO and weave in ends

*Since you’re knitting in the round, there’s no flipping of your work. Just a friendly reminder! :)

PS: That picture up top is all flattering, but here’s an outtake from the cold weather shoot my husband and I did for this post. This is an accurate representation of what I look like when rocking cold weather gear – Looks like I put the cowl in scowl, eh? Haha! :D

What do you think? Does this look like a PSA reminding kids to bundle up this winter or more like an ad for facial tissue?

Hi, Heidi! It was great to connect with you at the blogger hangout yesterday. I love the cowl. I have one almost finished that’s been sitting on my needles for a while. Time to finish that up!
