Bijou Basin Ranch Himalayan Summit Review & Giveaway

December 20, 2017 2 Comments

Have you ever tried yak yarn? Check out the specs on a 50% yak/50% wool yarn from Bijou Basin Ranch and enter for your chance to win a skein!
Christmas is in a few days, but that means two things! 1. If anyone still needs to get you a gift, play the old gift certificate card. As in, “I’m a knitter/crocheter and I like to pick my own yarn. Gift certificate, please!” 2. It may be time to treat yourself to a little something something if there’s room in the old budget to get some nice yarn. That’s where a yarn like the one we’re discussing today comes in! The final yarn review & giveaway of the year is Bijou Basin Ranch’s Himalayan Summit yarn, a lovely 50% Tibetan yak/50% superfine merino wool blend.

For review purposes, I made both a knit & crochet swatch (per usual) to see how Himalayan Summit works up for both crafts. This fingering weight yarn was easy to work with – no major issues with the yarn splitting or being finicky to work with. Of all the yarns I tried this year that were new to me, I have to say that this is one of my favorites. For me, most yarns come down to how they are to work with, because no matter how you slice it, you’re going to be spending a lot of time with your hands on it. It also comes down to color for me a lot. That is where this yarn legitimately takes the cake. This is technically a solid yarn, but the variation in the color of this yarn is visible, giving you a bunch of different shades of navy throughout. This variation gives knitters and crocheters the ability to look at a finished project knit in this yarn and see the fiber in a very textural way that I just love.

The Yarn: Bijou Basin Ranch’s Himalayan Summit

Colorway pictured: Juniper Berry
Skein details:
325 yd / 3.5 oz  (297m / 100g) skeins / 50% Tibetan Yak / 50% Superfine Merino
Knitting needles: US 4, 3.5 mm / 24 stitches & 29 rows over 4 inches
Crochet hook: US F, 3.75 mm / 20 sc & 24 rows over 4 inches
Cons: At ~$25 a skein, it’s not the cheapest yarn ever. It may be a stretch to buy a sweater quantity of this yarn, unless of course you try the gift certificate route.
Pros: I mean, it’s really, really nice yarn, and I’ll say it again – I can’t get enough of the gorgeous color! It varies in the most beautiful way throughout the skein, which I think you can see pretty well in the pictured swatches. The whole time I swatched with this yarn, I thought about how pretty it would be knit up in a nice shawl or sweater to show off the color variation.
Pattern ideas: For knitting, I’d say a nice and easy shawl done with a couple skeins of Himalayan Summit. The Sixth Degree Shawl is a nice one for this purpose since you can bind off whenever you run out of yarn. For crochet, you’re going to need a bit more yarn, but I’m going to go ahead and recommend the Granny Tassel Shawl for the exact same no-need-to-go-crazy-planning vibe as the recommended knitting pattern. ;)

“You’re telling me words can be pronounced in “You’re telling me words can be pronounced in different ways and mean the same things?!” 👀 Posting this here, just to make it clear: when anyone says skayne, skeen, or skyne, it can be safely assumed we’re talking about a bundle o’ yarn, a SKEIN. It’s not necessary to shame someone for using a word that is known to have MULTIPLE common pronunciations. 🧶
.
.
Can you plz comment sharing how you say SKEIN and where you learned it? The OED happens to say SKAYNE, but it’s not a personal attack if someone says SKEEN and you say SKYNE or even Saskatoon. I’m legitimately curious. We don’t all knit or crochet the same way, and craft evolves a bit like language - it is passed on. There is so much value in having conversations about & embracing these variations! ✌🏻

Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather than yarn. Here’s the latest mediocre-but-improving result of my slow quest to learn to set vintage inspired curls. 💇🏼‍♀️ I’m hoping to be able to wash my hair less using a regular vintage set, but we’ll see if it ends up being practical. 😆 Hair frustrates me so much more than crafts!

Do you also style your hair using vintage methods? If you have any tips for vintage hair styling or good resources to share, please do!
