How to Crochet an Oval

April 4, 2018 1 Comment

Learn how to start a crochet project with an oval, great for starting baby booties, totes, and more!
Ovals lend themselves so well to crochet, and mastering them opens a lot of doors for design possibilities. They really are a staple in crochet, forming the base of everything from bags and baby booties to storage containers and slippers. There are so many ways to crochet an oval shape, and today I want to show you how to start an oval using foundation single crochet stitches. Plus, since the Read Along Crochet Along started up this week and we just happen to be crocheting an oval base bag, a tutorial on how to start projects like this was in order.

Learn more about the RALCAL here.

How to crochet an oval

In this video, you’ll learn how to begin a crochet project with foundation single crochet stitches (FSCs) to form an oval base. (The first part of the video shows you how to work an FSC stitch if you’re new to it too!)  FSC stitches are my favorite way to begin a base worked in the round like this because the FSCs are stretchier, sturdier, AND much less fiddly than starting a project with a plain set of chain stitches. What’s not to love? ;)

Practice Oval Pattern

If you’re looking for the pattern to crochet the oval demoed in the video above, here’s how it all breaks down. You can for sure change up the stitches to suit a different project. It’s your crochet – go wild!

When it’s August & the crew has the day off, the When it’s August & the crew has the day off, the only thing to do is a Knitflix marathon! I hadn’t seen the latest season of Stranger Things and had a TON of knitting to do, so we decided why not make a day of it? For non knitters, this is a pretty accurate depiction of what a dream day looks like for maker types. (Plus or minus a cranky but cute house pet.)

Just making this for fun & to see how it feels to distill a yarn day into a short video like this. Big thank you to Jamie & Mariah for being my friends, even though they said “it’s okay if you don’t tag me in this.” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think about the wrong side of my intarsia knitti I think about the wrong side of my intarsia knitting kind of like some embroiderers do: I get (probably too) excited when the back’s neat and tidy. Are you this way? Is it just me?
.
Pictured is the wrong side of a large primary color intarsia swatch I knit for an upcoming design in @brooklyntweed Arbor. When I pulled it from my studio, I thanked my former self for talking the time to knit, weave in ends, & block a clean swatch already. As critical as they are, I’m excited to not have to make one today. I’ll advocate for swatching all day long, but I won’t pretend it’s like the funnest step in the process! 😆🧶
