How-to: DIY Ruby Slippers

October 29, 2012 Leave a Comment

Halloween is on Wednesday, ack! With an unexpected stint-away-from-my-craft-room-and-computer monkey wrench thrown in the mix last week, I had to come up with a costume quick-like, and my obsession with the Wizard of Oz this year seemed like the right way to go with my getup.

Supplies

old shoes

red glitter

super gloss Mod Podge

sponge brush

acrylic Mod Podge sealer

Directions

Wipe clean your shoes with a damp cloth and let dry completely before you begin.

Mix 3 parts glitter and one part Mod Podge in a disposable cup, and stir well.

Spread a thick layer of the glitter mixture all over your shoes. As the layer is still wet, pour on more dry glitter and secure it with the residual Mod Podge in your sponge brush.

Once the whole visible surface is covered, let your shoes dry for about 15 minutes. Add more layers and let dry again for 15 minutes in between every layer. When you’re happy with how glittery your shoes are, cover each one in a layer of plain (glitter-free) Mod Podge.

Let shoes dry completely before sealing them with an acrylic Mod Podge sealant. Be careful to use the sealant in a well-ventilated area and follow all package directions.

Pop on a light blue gingham dress and your new kicks, and you’ve got a Wizard of Oz Dorothy costume ready to go! I, conveniently, have a small Toto-looking dog to round out the whole look. The original Toto, played by a famous dog named Terry, was a Cairn Terrier (not a mini schnauzer mix), but I don’t care – Storm is cuter.
