Mini Golden Snitch Sweater Pattern

July 21, 2015 7 Comments

A free knitting pattern for a mini golden snitch sweater, inspired by the sweater Harry gets in book six! As a librarian and crafter, I have quite the crop of DIY-loving and bookish friends, and my pal Marissa at Rae Gun Ramblings is at the intersection of both worlds. She blogs about books and crafts, and often her crafts are inspired by books. In honor of Harry Potter’s birthday on July 31, she’s hosting a fun blog tour/party thing where she, I and a bunch of other excellent bloggers share our best Harry Potter crafts. About a year ago, I shared a mini Weasley sweater pattern, and this year, I’m taking that idea up a notch by tweaking the pattern and adding a golden snitch to the front.

The finished sweater is about 4.5 inches tall, and this time, I designed it in a cotton yarn for added stitch (or should I say snitch!) definition. Just like last year’s mini sweater, I used a simple bottom-up raglan sweater construction. If you’ve never knit a sweater, but are comfortable on DPNs, this is a great first sweater project for you. If you need help doing any step of this pattern, check out last fall’s bottom-up raglan sweater knit along tutorials for how to work through each step of the sweater knitting process in detail. And hey! If colorwork (or even just tiny colorwork) freaks you out, you can always just knit a plain sweater following this pattern – just skip the color part. Easy!

Use the kitchener stitch or a three needle bindoff to close the underarm holes. Weave in all ends and block to finish. Here’s a tutorial on how to block a knitting project if you need it. :)

A collection of mini Weasley sweaters inspired by Harry Potter.

Looks like my technique has improved a bit since last year! Plus, the yarn used for this year’s sweater doesn’t have an artificial fiber running through it, so errors in technique blocked out beautifully compared to last year. Funny how much your fiber content makes a difference. :)

Since it won’t be clean for long, swipe to see w Since it won’t be clean for long, swipe to see what my home studio looks like these days. Nothing will ever quite be like the old Hands Occupied Studio, but I’m pretty pleased with how I shoehorned everything in this space. Function over form + a layer of yarn cuteness-meets-chaos is how I’d describe my creative space needs. 😆 When I was still renting the studio, those needs included “doesn’t rain suspicious brown water from a crack in the ceiling for a year,” so this is an improvement! 😆

Finally organizing & putting the finishing touches Finally organizing & putting the finishing touches on my home studio. After losing my studio space last fall, it’s feels really great to *occupy* this new space all the way. 😉
.
I started by removing general clutter & returning straggler supplies from various WIPs, videos & design deadlines to their homes. Next, I hung a third peg board in the space - this one is mostly for display and less for organizing tools or projects. For the first time ever, I’m displaying projects from my book, plus a couple other faves. (The best thing about designing more yarn crafts besides knit & crochet is that I have some really fun -and delightfully pettable 😆- samples around.) I finished by adding a square dowel to my small supply storage tower to keep it from tipping over, plus re-arranging and de-cluttering the closet.
.
This cleaner space already has me feeling so much more creative and less overwhelmed. Now to find a safe spot in the basement for the tower of project samples in Rubbermaid tubs I liberated from my WIPs closet. Also why are there five?!
.
Here’s to keeping it clean for a few weeks! 🧶
