Newbie Fringe Scarf Pattern

March 2, 2015 2 Comments

The Newbie Fringe Scarf - A free beginner pattern!

Hey, new knitters! Maybe you’re here because you’ve been following along with knewbies, the knitting 101 series I’ve been running here on Hands Occupied. Maybe you’re here because you’ve had someone teach you to knit and you’re looking for a good first knitting pattern. Either way, I’m glad you’re here! This absolute beginner-friendly pattern is knit entirely in garter stitch, which means you only have to know how to do a basic cast on, knit stitch, and a basic bind off.

The Newbie Fringe Scarf - A free beginner pattern!

The Newbie Fringe Scarf Pattern

Skills
How to do a basic knitting cast on
How to do a knit stitch
How to bind off (coming soon!)

If you want to use a yarn other than the one listed, you might want to check out this tutorial on how to read yarn labels so you know what knitting needles to buy to work with the yarn you choose.

Abbreviations
CO – cast on
k – knit
sts – stitches
BO – bind off

Supplies
1 pair size 11 US knitting needles
2 skeins Patons Classic Wool Bulky yarn in Navy
1 skein Patons Classic Wool Bulky yarn in Spring Green
crochet hook for weaving in ends and attaching fringe
scissors

CO 20 sts
row 1. k

Repeat row 1 until you’re scarf reaches your desired length or you run out of yarn, whichever comes first.

BO all sts, and weave in ends.

Cut 40, 12-inch pieces of yarn for fringe. Using a crochet hook, attach a piece of yarn folded in half into each stitch at each short edges of the scarf, for a total of 20 pieces of yarn at each end of the scarf.

PS: How good of a knitting model is my hunky husband? It was so fun taking his picture for a change! Much preferable to wrestling with a tripod out in the cold alone. :)

Your blog is so cool, Heidi!
It is inspiring to see so many great projects! I thought I would become a librarian, but I ended up working for Waldenbooks for 11 years. Various jobs later, I became an artist. Always was an artist, but now it is my main gig! I’ve shared your blog with my friends & family.

If you look closely, you’ll see I’m casually k If you look closely, you’ll see I’m casually knitting from one sweater into another here, no big deal. (What can I say, I lost a game of yarn chicken. 😂) I almost didn’t post this because I was worried someone might have some nonsense to say about my ability to knit. Then I remembered I can’t care about that. Silly me, I almost forgot myself!

Speaking of which, dang it’s good to have my mental health back consistently after the past couple of years. The anxious parts of my personality are just chilling, rather than constantly screaming that my work isn’t good enough to share. The confident parts of me that matter have me creating (and starting to share my creations & process with strangers and friends) again!
