The Delta Hat is here, let’s celebrate with a knit along!

August 3, 2015 1 Comment

Check out the Delta Hat, an asymmetrical cloche that's a blast to knit!

Allow me to introduce the Delta Hat, the newest addition to the Hands Occupied Pattern Shop. This pattern release is extra special because I’ve partnered with yarn company Bijou Basin Ranch, who you might remember from my post about yak yarn or the Outlander Chevron Shawl earlier this spring. They asked if I could design a project using one of their yarns and host a knit along to go along with it, and being a KAL lover, I was like, “yes, definitely!”

But first, the Delta Hat!

The Delta Hat is an asymmetrical hat with a garter stitch flap that can be left down for added coverage or buttoned up for a cute, cloche look. The side of the hat opposite the flap features a triangle motif reminiscent of art deco architecture, and the off-center decreases help this hat lie naturally at a jaunty angle.

Delta gets her shape from a combo of short rows, one row buttonholes and an asymmetrical decrease. The flap as well as art deco accent are both triangular, hence the name – delta. The yarn is a 75% yak/25% wool fingering weight yarn called Himalayan Trail with awesome texture and color. The buttons I designed the hat for are from Balwen Woodworks, a Chicago-based company that produces buttons and other notions from twigs, vintage rulers, and in the case of the buttons I used for this hat, upcycled tool handles. So cool!

The Knit Along

And come see me at Stitches to get your hands on a KAL kit!

We’re going to be kicking off the knit along with a bang this Friday at Stitches Midwest in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg. I’ll be in the Bijou Basin Ranch booth from 10 to 1 on Friday 8/7 with samples of the hat for you to check out, as well as yarn in a range of colors and some Balwen Woodworks buttons to check out. There’s apparently going to be a poster with my face on it somewhere, which will probably make me turn bright red – I’ll definitely Instagram-document my awkwardness. ;) Come take a selfie or two with me, and get your hands on a kit with everything you need to knit the Delta for the knit along. I’d love to meet you!

If you can’t make it to Stitches, no worries! You can follow the Stitches action and throughout the knit along with#BBRHandsOccupied and #DeltaHatKAL. I can’t wait to cast on with you guys this Friday!

“You’re telling me words can be pronounced in “You’re telling me words can be pronounced in different ways and mean the same things?!” 👀 Posting this here, just to make it clear: when anyone says skayne, skeen, or skyne, it can be safely assumed we’re talking about a bundle o’ yarn, a SKEIN. It’s not necessary to shame someone for using a word that is known to have MULTIPLE common pronunciations. 🧶
.
.
Can you plz comment sharing how you say SKEIN and where you learned it? The OED happens to say SKAYNE, but it’s not a personal attack if someone says SKEEN and you say SKYNE or even Saskatoon. I’m legitimately curious. We don’t all knit or crochet the same way, and craft evolves a bit like language - it is passed on. There is so much value in having conversations about & embracing these variations! ✌🏻

Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather than yarn. Here’s the latest mediocre-but-improving result of my slow quest to learn to set vintage inspired curls. 💇🏼‍♀️ I’m hoping to be able to wash my hair less using a regular vintage set, but we’ll see if it ends up being practical. 😆 Hair frustrates me so much more than crafts!

Do you also style your hair using vintage methods? If you have any tips for vintage hair styling or good resources to share, please do!
