The Quinque Cowl

September 17, 2015 1 Comment

You won't want to stop wearing the Quinque Cowl! With double drawstrings, easy colorwork and a casual, comfy feel, you'll want to make one for all of your friends.

I call this my autumnal Snow White moment.

Yay, it’s new pattern day! As promised in yesterday’s post, my Quinque Cowl pattern went live at midnight last night. The Quinque cowl is a simple looking, sleek garment for transitional weather. Designed to rest close to the skin, the Quinque uses an ultra soft, light-feeling yarn and incorporates two drawstrings for easy, casual wear. The name quinque comes from the Latin word for five, and as a name, this suits this garmentʼs understated appearance.

You can your hands on the Quinque Cowl pattern in my Ravelry store.

The Quinque Cowl, a new pattern from Hands Occupied.

You can knit more than one Qunique Cowl with the yarn suggested in this pattern. Ideas for variations to the finished knit: Consider adding pom poms or tassels to the ends of the drawstrings for some fun personality. Vary the color placement, cowl height, and stripe widths. If youʼre really wanting to get creative with your Quinque Cowl, you could even incorporate simple lacework in one or more of the stripes. This adaptable design is a fun one to get creative with.

The Quinque Cowl is a crazy comfortable cowl featuring drawstrings and the softest yarn for a comfortable, wearable accessory you won't want to stop wearing!

For those of you who read this blog closely, yes! This is the pattern I was alluding to in Monday’s post about the yarns I’m knitting with this month. The yarn is Shibui Maai, a chainette yarn that’s 70% superbaby alpaca and 30% fine merino wool. I knit this pattern in the pollen, ash, fjord and imperial colorways, the last of which was released just about a month ago and is SO on point for fall color trends. The incredible softness of this yarn, between its fiber content and chainette construction, are to die for.

A look at the two Quinque Cowl samples I knit with the 4 suggested skeins of yarn, plus the leftovers. I think another sample might just be in the works for what’s left! I might need to add a bunch of tassels to this one… :)

Speaking of chainette yarns, the finished material that’s created when you knit with a chainette yarn tends to behave and feel a little like fabric you’d buy by the bolt at the store. The fabric-esque characteristics of this yarn completely inspired me to design a piece not unlike something I might sew. The double drawstring casings are 100% a nod to the fabric-ness of the finished piece. I hope you enjoy this wearable, endlessly-soft cowl!

“You’re telling me words can be pronounced in “You’re telling me words can be pronounced in different ways and mean the same things?!” 👀 Posting this here, just to make it clear: when anyone says skayne, skeen, or skyne, it can be safely assumed we’re talking about a bundle o’ yarn, a SKEIN. It’s not necessary to shame someone for using a word that is known to have MULTIPLE common pronunciations. 🧶
.
.
Can you plz comment sharing how you say SKEIN and where you learned it? The OED happens to say SKAYNE, but it’s not a personal attack if someone says SKEEN and you say SKYNE or even Saskatoon. I’m legitimately curious. We don’t all knit or crochet the same way, and craft evolves a bit like language - it is passed on. There is so much value in having conversations about & embracing these variations! ✌🏻

Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather than yarn. Here’s the latest mediocre-but-improving result of my slow quest to learn to set vintage inspired curls. 💇🏼‍♀️ I’m hoping to be able to wash my hair less using a regular vintage set, but we’ll see if it ends up being practical. 😆 Hair frustrates me so much more than crafts!

Do you also style your hair using vintage methods? If you have any tips for vintage hair styling or good resources to share, please do!
