Things to Latch Hook

Latch hook is back! Check out 9 inspiring ideas for a contemporary take on this shaggy, well-loved craft.

If you follow along on Instagram or Twitter, you’ll have noticed my recent obsession with a yarn craft of a totally different stripe than knit or crochet. My name is Heidi, and I’m obsessed with latch hooking. You heard me! Latch hook, as in those little charted rug/pillow kits every kid was making in the ’70s and ’80s when homecrafting was a bit more… shaggy than has been seen in recent years. However, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: latch hooking, really rug making in general, is back!

Personally, I think it’s born from an extension of the current popularity of pom poms, tassels and macrame in crafting and home decor. In a couple weeks, I’ll do a blog post-based deep dive into latch hooking history and also share a tutorial with you on how to tackle this fun and simple craft from a more contemporary perspective. For today, I just want to share 9 things to latch hook to inspire you to consider trying this would-be throwback of a craft. :)

First, let’s contextualize this post with a look at what you’re probably thinking of when you envision a latch hook project:

I write this blog all by myself, so I don’t always include an author name. I’m Heidi, and you can find all of my social links in the navigation menu and sidebar. Or search @handsoccupied on most social networks. Nice to meet you! :)

That clown latch hook is too funny! I know exactly what you mean when envisaging “traditional”? latch hook. Have just purchased my first blank rug canvas and will have a go when I get time, inspired by these much prettier :) pieces. Thank You!

“You’re telling me words can be pronounced in “You’re telling me words can be pronounced in different ways and mean the same things?!” 👀 Posting this here, just to make it clear: when anyone says skayne, skeen, or skyne, it can be safely assumed we’re talking about a bundle o’ yarn, a SKEIN. It’s not necessary to shame someone for using a word that is known to have MULTIPLE common pronunciations. 🧶

Can you plz comment sharing how you say SKEIN and where you learned it? The OED happens to say SKAYNE, but it’s not a personal attack if someone says SKEEN and you say SKYNE or even Saskatoon. I’m legitimately curious. We don’t all knit or crochet the same way, and craft evolves a bit like language - it is passed on. There is so much value in having conversations about & embracing these variations! ✌🏻

Here’s the latest mediocre-but-improving result of my slow quest to learn to set vintage inspired curls. 💇🏼‍♀️ I’m hoping to be able to wash my hair less using a regular vintage set, but we’ll see if it ends up being practical. 😆 Hair frustrates me so much more than crafts!
