Briggs & Little Country Roving – Yarn Review & Giveaway

January 31, 2019 1 Comment

Yarn was provided for review & giveaway by Briggs & Little. Opinions are my own.

Briggs & Little Country Roving yarn is 100% wool and comes from one of the only remaining woolen mills in North America that takes raw wool and turns it into spun yarns, all under one roof from start to finish. Learn more about this versatile Canadian yarn and enter for your chance to win a skein!

We’ve been doing things a little differently in 2019 here on Hands Occupied, but one thing I know you’ll be excited to hear? Review & Giveaway posts are here to stay! I waited til literally the last day of January to squeeze this one in, but this yarn is a fun one you may not have heart of. Let me introduce you to Briggs & Little‘s Country Roving yarn.

Briggs & Little Country Roving yarn is 100% wool and comes from one of the only remaining woolen mills in North America that takes raw wool and turns it into spun yarns, all under one roof from start to finish. Learn more about this versatile Canadian yarn and enter for your chance to win a skein!

The Yarn: Briggs & Little Country Roving

Colorway pictured: Blue Heather
Skein details:
 155 Yds (142 m) per 8 oz (227g) Roll. / 100% wool, 5 strand
Knitting needles: US 11, 8 mm / 8 stitches & 11 rows over 4 inches (10 cm)
Crochet hook: US N-15, 10 mm / 7.5 sc & 8 rows over 4 inches (10 cm)
Cons: This yarn is made of 5 strands of fiber, which can pull apart if you’re doing something more heavy duty. I ran into issues with it pulling apart while weaving and tying macrame knots.
Pros: Country roving lends itself to getting creative beyond knitting or crochet. I definitely loved the color and texture, both of which inspired me to play with making a small wall hanging and practicing my macrame & braiding skills!
Pattern Ideas: I’d recommend that knitters try a larger-gauge version of the Faux Woven Cowl with this yarn. The Round Granny Cushion would crochet up wonderfully with this yarn (and is super quick to make). But also, dipping your toe into the world of weaving would be really cool with Country Roving too!

As with all of their yarns, Briggs & Little scours, dyes, blends, cards, spins, reels, packages and labels Country Roving in-house in their mill that dates back to 1857. (Learn more about Briggs & Little’s history here.) All of their wool is sourced in Canada too!

Working on a sample for some upcoming videos. It’s an overcast day with intermittent sunshine & I have a scruffy little sidecar. 🐶 Can’t complain!

Peg boards and craft room organization go together Peg boards and craft room organization go together like peanut butter and jelly. So, as you can see, do latch hook tools and screwdriver organizers! 🪛
.
I think this trick translates to any tool with a thick handle, so leather working tools, punch needles, print making tools, etc. should work! What other tools am I, a needlecrafter, blanking on right now?

Pegboard storage is my favorite for craft supplies Pegboard storage is my favorite for craft supplies, so getting a few hung in my new studio has been a priority. Here’s my first attempt. 🔨
.
Details: This pegboard panel is for organizing my knitting needles, latch hook tools, sewing thread, etc. It doesn’t need to hold much weight, so I didn’t anchor this into a stud - just used basic drywall anchors. I’ve also got a set of two 2’x4’ panels for another spot in my studio, and those will need a stud/more than 3 drywall anchors. Wish me luck!

June’s big ears can get cold in winter, so I’m improvising a doggie ear warmer/hood for her. What are the odds she tries to shred it immediately when it’s done?
