How-to: Bat Place Cards

September 16, 2013 Leave a Comment

How-to: Bat Place Cards | Hands Occupied

Place cards are something I tend to forget about until the last minute every holiday. These simple and easy place cards are super quick to put together, so even the most disorganized hostess among us can slot in tossing these together the day of a party. Bonus, they put otherwise-tossed toilet paper tubes to adorable use. What’s not to love?

Supplies

toilet paper tubes
black acrylic paint
silver acrylic paint
paint brush
black construction paper or cardstock
scissors
pencil with eraser
x-acto knife
quick-drying glue

Directions

Paint your toilet paper tubes black all over and let dry to start.

Create bat ears by flattening one end of a tube, folding down one side of the tube, and then the other.

Using an x-acto knift, carve a small fang shape into the eraser of a pencil. Stamp two fangs onto each TP tube with your mini stamp. Let dry.

Cut several pieces of black paper into mustache shapes. (Or buy some pre-cut mustaches at the store like I did because I’m way lazy, ha!)

Cut each mustache in half, fold a little lip on the widest edge of the mustache, and glue two wings on to each bat. I really recommend super glue since it dries almost immediately when gluing paper to paper. Just don’t stick the wing in the wrong place if you’re using super glue – you’ve only got one shot with that stuff.

Here is a herd of my bats. To convert them into place cards, use your x-acto knife to cut along the bottom edges of each fang.

To finish, just add your guests’ names to pieces of paper and slot them into each bat’s teeth. Cute and simple!

When it’s August & the crew has the day off, the When it’s August & the crew has the day off, the only thing to do is a Knitflix marathon! I hadn’t seen the latest season of Stranger Things and had a TON of knitting to do, so we decided why not make a day of it? For non knitters, this is a pretty accurate depiction of what a dream day looks like for maker types. (Plus or minus a cranky but cute house pet.)

Just making this for fun & to see how it feels to distill a yarn day into a short video like this. Big thank you to Jamie & Mariah for being my friends, even though they said “it’s okay if you don’t tag me in this.” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think about the wrong side of my intarsia knitti I think about the wrong side of my intarsia knitting kind of like some embroiderers do: I get (probably too) excited when the back’s neat and tidy. Are you this way? Is it just me?
.
Pictured is the wrong side of a large primary color intarsia swatch I knit for an upcoming design in @brooklyntweed Arbor. When I pulled it from my studio, I thanked my former self for talking the time to knit, weave in ends, & block a clean swatch already. As critical as they are, I’m excited to not have to make one today. I’ll advocate for swatching all day long, but I won’t pretend it’s like the funnest step in the process! 😆🧶
