How to Knit an Afghan for Under $35

August 27, 2014 1 Comment

How to Knit an Afghan for Under $35 at handsoccupied.com

I’ve always been of the mind that crafting & DIY are about creative expression, but also, I’m not too proud to say, saving money. Don’t get me wrong – I wouldn’t be doing things like making a clutch out of a box of pencils if I didn’t love the process, but if I bought a clutch like the one I shared on Monday, you can bet it would cost a heck of a lot more than the ~$7 I paid to make it. That being said, craft supplies can add up when you’re as addicted as I am to DIY, particularly if you go through yarn like there’s no tomorrow. That’s why today I’m going to talk to you about Blitsy, a website that offers really great deals on craft supplies.

How it works

Their easy-to-navigate site features supplies for a range of crafts: papercrafts, fine arts, sewing & needle, jewelry, knitting & crochet, kids crafts, and general craft supplies, like adhesives and craft storage items. To get in on the deals, you have to sign up for an account, which takes just a few minutes. New sales start Monday through Saturday at 10 a.m. CST, and sales of a given item last for 4 days or until they sell out.

PS: When you refer someone to Blitsy who completes an order with them, you earn $10 to use toward your own next purchase.

My latest Blitsy haul

You can see my latest Blitsy haul in the photos – that’s 10 skeins of yarn (enough for an afghan), a set of yarn bobbins, 4 crochet hooks, two sets of needle point protectors, and a needle and stitch gauge tool. And I got it all for $33.07 plus shipping. Normally when you knit an afghan, you’re investing a chunk of change in just the yarn, even if you’re getting budget yarn. Keeping my eyes peeled for yarn deals on Blitsy is basically my new hobby. In the past month, they’ve had Red Heart Classic, Red Heart Super Saver, Bernat Handicrafter Cotton, Sugar ‘N Cream and more yarns on sale. For real – even if you’re just doing a baby blanket, you can save a bunch of money with Blitsy.

Working on a sample for some upcoming videos. It’s an overcast day with intermittent sunshine & I have a scruffy little sidecar. 🐶 Can’t complain!

Peg boards and craft room organization go together Peg boards and craft room organization go together like peanut butter and jelly. So, as you can see, do latch hook tools and screwdriver organizers! 🪛
.
I think this trick translates to any tool with a thick handle, so leather working tools, punch needles, print making tools, etc. should work! What other tools am I, a needlecrafter, blanking on right now?

Pegboard storage is my favorite for craft supplies Pegboard storage is my favorite for craft supplies, so getting a few hung in my new studio has been a priority. Here’s my first attempt. 🔨
.
Details: This pegboard panel is for organizing my knitting needles, latch hook tools, sewing thread, etc. It doesn’t need to hold much weight, so I didn’t anchor this into a stud - just used basic drywall anchors. I’ve also got a set of two 2’x4’ panels for another spot in my studio, and those will need a stud/more than 3 drywall anchors. Wish me luck!

June’s big ears can get cold in winter, so I’m improvising a doggie ear warmer/hood for her. What are the odds she tries to shred it immediately when it’s done?
