How-to: Metal Stamping 101

September 10, 2012 2 Comments

I met the kind folks over at ImpressArt at the Craft and Hobby Association summer conference this year, and I’ve gotta say, they’re a super friendly bunch of New Jerseyans. When they wanted to send me a kit to try out metal stamping for the first time, I was super pumped.

I was so pumped, in fact, that I decided to finally bite the bullet and fulfill a goal of mine: self-producing my first Hands Occupied video. A couple years ago, my cousin Dan helped me out a ton by shooting and editing a video tutorial for making wedding table numbers, but I’ve been wanting to figure out a sustainable way to do this myself ever since. My husband thinks this video is awesome, but full disclosure, I have a background in video production. I worked for awhile as a freelance video editor, and creating this reminded me of just how rusty I’ve gotten! Let me know what you think, good or bad, in the comments. My biggest beef with this video are my camera skills, but I know they’ll get better the more videos I make. Here goes nothing!

The metal stamping process is really simple (unlike video production), though I know I’ll get way better at metal stamping with practice. The hardest part of metal stamping, for me anyway, was getting the letters to properly line up. I’ve got a tutorial planned for next week with tips on getting your letters straight. Stay tuned!

A big thank you goes to my cousin Dan once again for producing the incredible introduction to my videos. Check out more of his work on Vimeo.

The kit featured in this post was provided by ImpressArt Metal Stamps.

A note on Very Serious Crafts: In the post I discuss stepping away from the @seriouscrafts podcast to give myself more time to devote to some minor medical issues.
