Knit in Public Day Meetup in Chicago!

June 4, 2015 Leave a Comment

Knit in Public Day Meetup in Chicago! | Hands Occupied

Saturday, June 13 is Worldwide Knit in Public Day, and I’m finally realizing my dream of hosting an event in honor of the day. (A big thank you to those who responded to my “should I do this this year?” survey with location ideas!) Since I’m a Chicago resident, it makes sense to host the event here, and I’ve invited my knitting group, including fellow knitting designers Stefanie, Allyson, Leah and Laura. to join in the fun. For a look at the event I attended last year and for a rundown of WTF knit in public day is, check out this post.

When/Where/Etc!

When: Saturday, June 13, noon to 5 pm – Since we’re knitting, I figured I’d go for a large window of time. I’ll probably be knitting for 5 hours that day at home, unshowered anyway, so why not do it outdoors? Speaking of which…

Where: Humboldt Park, Chicago; rain location: Humboldt Haus Sandwich Bar – We can meet up at the Humboldt Park Boathouse, which has an adjoining parking lot. We can set up our knitting there or nearby if the boathouse itself is busy. As of today, the extended forecast is showing morning showers for the 13th. Since it’s more than a week away, I’ve selected the Humboldt Haus Sandwich Bar as our rainout location since it’s right next to the north end of the park.

PS: The Puerto Rican Festival & Parade and the Chicago Dyke March, both slated to take place in Humboldt Park in June, don’t take place until 1 and 2 weeks, respectively, after WWKIP day. :)

What to bring: a WIP, yourself, a blanket or lawn chair and some snacks if you like! – If we end up at the rainout location, I’ll encourage everyone to eat the restaurant’s food and beer, which are delicious. This shouldn’t be too much to ask, particularly of beer lovers, as the restaurant has a awesome stuff on tap!

Do I need to RSVP? Nah. Feel free to come and go as you please. I’m thinking that even if we don’t get rained out, we can head to the sandwich place for a nice beer at the end of the event if people are up for it. I’m thinking this can just be a super chill event.

Worldwide Knit in Public Day!

For Non-Chicagoans

Obviously, many of you are not Chicago area residents, so I understand those who can’t make it. However, if you’re an Instagram or Twitter addict like me, you should jump on the #wwkip and #handsoccupied hashtags to share pictures of any public/outdoor (even if it’s in your backyard) knitting you do on 6/13. I’ll include faves in my WWKIP roundup post the Monday after the big day!

How to do a one-step provisional knitting cast on How to do a one-step provisional knitting cast on / a.k.a. crochet provisional cast on, scrap yarn cast on
.
I read recently that tiktok and Instagram are being used as search engines more and more. 🤔 I thought since I’m going to all the work of making tutorials on YouTube, I should experiment with making a quick version of them for other platforms. There are obvious teaching limitations to vertical video, short-form content like this, but I think I covered the gist of this cast on in a minute. The YouTube version also covers how to unzip this cast on because there was time for it 👍🏻 L1nk is in my profile.
.
I’m very much looking for feedback as I continue to make instructional knitting & craft videos. Sometimes good tutorials are hard to find, and (ideally polite) feedback helps me improve.

For the first time in a long time, there’s a new For the first time in a long time, there’s a new tutorial from Hands Occupied! 🎉 The video is live on YouTube & the blog.
.
The post covers what provisional cast ons are & how they differ, and the video covers how to work a one-step provisional cast on using scrap yarn and a crochet hook. (This is a great one to save for future reference.)
.
I learned several names for this method while researching this video & post. Crochet provisional cast on, one-step cast on, scrap yarn cast on - if you know even more names for this technique, please share!

Peg boards and craft room organization go together Peg boards and craft room organization go together like peanut butter and jelly. So, as you can see, do latch hook tools and screwdriver organizers! 🪛
.
I think this trick translates to any tool with a thick handle, so leather working tools, punch needles, print making tools, etc. should work! What other tools am I, a needlecrafter, blanking on right now?

Pegboard storage is my favorite for craft supplies Pegboard storage is my favorite for craft supplies, so getting a few hung in my new studio has been a priority. Here’s my first attempt. 🔨
.
Details: This pegboard panel is for organizing my knitting needles, latch hook tools, sewing thread, etc. It doesn’t need to hold much weight, so I didn’t anchor this into a stud - just used basic drywall anchors. I’ve also got a set of two 2’x4’ panels for another spot in my studio, and those will need a stud/more than 3 drywall anchors. Wish me luck!
