Thank you so so much to everyone who completed the Reader Survey this year! It’s clear that I’ve got a bunch of knitters and crocheters on my hands these days, and you guys want patterns, tips, knit alongs and crochet ideas. Don’t worry, non-needlers, I will still be doing other DIYs! I do need some time, after all, to develop new patterns and knit or crochet them up.

Chevron Sunglasses Case Knitting Pattern
What says summer knitting better than a quickie little sunglass case pattern? Grab a nice little ball of yarn leftover from one of your winter cowls, a couple of needles, and you’ve got yourself the perfect single-sitting beach knitting pattern. Or if it’s a rainy day, pop in a movie and you can make this start to finish in an hour or two. AND you can immediately use the finished case since it’s still summer. Like I said – summer knitting perfection. ;)
Why I Learned to Knit Left-Handed
A weird thing happened out of nowhere last fall. Weird, but super exciting! I got three emails in a span of two weeks from magazines wanting to work with Hands Occupied in 2014. Finally last weekend, months after those initial emails, I opened my mailbox to find a surprise. A hard copy of my first magazine feature in “the UK’s bestselling knit mag,” Let’s Knit! Visit the full post for a piece I wrote for them on the time I thought I’d never knit again.
Shorty Socks / Knit Along Wrap Up
It’s been real, folks, but the first Hands Occupied knit along has come to a close. :( I had so much fun sharpening my knitting needles skills, making some new friends and finishing a couple pairs of socks during this process. Pictured today is my new Shorty Socks knitting pattern, made using the exact techniques shared in each step of the Knit Along.
Weekly Reader + Pillows to Perk Up Your Place!
I think pillows might be what DIY was invented for – they’re just so expensive at the store! Not only that, they can be homemade in a variety of ways by any level of DIYer. For real, if you only ever do one DIY, it should be a throw pillow or cushion or two to really make your place yours. Check out 10 of my recent favorite pillowy projects from the crafty blog world.
Knit Along Day 5: The Toe!
We’re in the home stretch, knitters!! Today I’m going to show you all how to do a toe decrease, which, surpriii-iiise!, is way easier that the parts of sock knitting you’ve already mastered. Aren’t you excited?
Weekly Reader
It’s been a full year of the Weekly Reader format we’ve come to know and love, so I’m thinking it’s time for a change. Instead of sharing random faves of the week every Friday, I think I’ll start sharing themed roundups that feature amazing projects from a little more than the past week. But! I’ll still share items that are fresh, focusing on the most recent month or two. Pinky swear!
Weekly Reader
This week, blogs have been full of awesome Mother’s Day, May Day, floral and Cinco de Mayo ideas, which has been fun to see. Even though I’m not wild about the fact that it’s already May (I really don’t understand how 2014 is nearly half gone!), I’m really enjoying all of the great ideas people have been sharing online.
Knit Along Day 3: The Heel Turn
Before you turn the heel, this is what you’re working with – a ribbed leg that’s several inches long, and a 2.5-3 inch heel flap. Now all of a sudden, since humans’ feet are perpendicular to their legs, you’ve got to start knitting in a totally different direction than you have been! Plus, half your sock is chilling up on the top of your foot, and the other half is down at the base of your heel. First time knitters, you’re probably thinking this is pretty weird about now, amirite?
