Brown Sheep Company’s new Synchrony yarn blends pima cotton and wool together to create a sturdy yarn (from the cotton) that’s still springy (from the wool). The range of 9 colors you can get this DK weight yarn in is playful and different that the same colors we see over and over in yarn. As a color lover, I’m very excited by this, and it was hard to chose just one from among all of the options!

The Yarn: Brown Sheep Company Synchrony

Colorway pictured: Soiree
Skein details:
 100g / 3.5 oz. skeins / 210 yds / 60% cotton & 40% wool / DK weight
Knitting needles: US 7, 4.5 mm / 16 stitches & 20 rows over 4 inches
Crochet hook: US H-8, 5 mm / 18 sc & 22 rows over 4 inches
Cons: The sample skeins I received for this review turned my skin blue, but according to Brown Sheep Company, that was very much an anomaly. The skein originally sent for giveaway has been replaced, and the company shared this nice explanation of how they test their yarn in-house in their mill to prevent issues like this moving forward.

“Brown Sheep tests small samples of dyed yarn by placing it on a weighted press between two pieces of white paper. This allows them to see if any excess dye is present, and rise the yarn another cycle if necessary. When excess dye appears in rinse water, it doesn’t mean that the color is washing out of the yarn — rather, it indicates the yarn has become saturated with dye and there are extra dye molecules within the yarn that can’t be bonded to the fiber. For future dye lots, they will make sure the yarn is more thoroughly tested for color over-saturation.”

Pros: They absolutely crushed it in terms of customer support when they realized there was an issue with the yarn they sent us blogger & designer types! (Which is something that I personally think is impressive.)

Color issue aside, Synchrony is a great yarn for spring! As you can see in the photos, the different textures and sheens of the cotton and wool come together to create this yarn. The difference in sheen was especially fun to experiment with while swatching for this post. Overall, the unique cotton/wool blend has a nice lightness to it, and it comes in a really fun range of colors.

Pattern ideas: Synchrony would be wonderful for a springy shawl or wrap for layering, so I’d use it to knit the Other People’s Houses Shawl at a larger gauge. The undulating drop stitches would be great to pair with this yarn. And with summer ahead, I would totally crochet a whole set of Ribbed Can Koozies to take advantage of the great color of this yarn.

“You’re telling me words can be pronounced in “You’re telling me words can be pronounced in different ways and mean the same things?!” 👀 Posting this here, just to make it clear: when anyone says skayne, skeen, or skyne, it can be safely assumed we’re talking about a bundle o’ yarn, a SKEIN. It’s not necessary to shame someone for using a word that is known to have MULTIPLE common pronunciations. 🧶

Can you plz comment sharing how you say SKEIN and where you learned it? The OED happens to say SKAYNE, but it’s not a personal attack if someone says SKEEN and you say SKYNE or even Saskatoon. I’m legitimately curious. We don’t all knit or crochet the same way, and craft evolves a bit like language - it is passed on. There is so much value in having conversations about & embracing these variations! ✌🏻

Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather Sometimes my weekend projects involve hair rather than yarn. Here’s the latest mediocre-but-improving result of my slow quest to learn to set vintage inspired curls. 💇🏼‍♀️ I’m hoping to be able to wash my hair less using a regular vintage set, but we’ll see if it ends up being practical. 😆 Hair frustrates me so much more than crafts!
